That Was The Year That Was

December 31, 2008

Here we are. The end of 2008. Alleluia. Wasn't the last time we endured such tense times exactly forty years ago -- 1968 -- the year that separated the past from the future?

As the economy crashed and burned in the waning months of the year, so too did my external hard drive. What a disaster! This digital storage device was the repository of my ten-year collection of current and archival GU athletic photos, to say nothing of thousands of essays, and written documents related to this blog. What about a back-up? That was my back-up. They say the data can be recovered, but at a cost.

With the loss of my drive, I have spent much of the past month preparing for and refining a new website, a companion site to guhoyas.com. When it goes live early in the new year, raiseourgame.com will focus on the importance of increased support for our athletic teams. It will also serve as the new host site for View from the Hilltop. I can't wait.

In the meantime, here are a few photographic memories of 2008 that didn't evaporate into cyberspace with my hard drive's contents.

Lacrosse captain Matt McBride '08 with Matt Behrens of Bronxville last April at Lessing Field at Fairfield University where the Hoyas prevailed 10-8

The 1978 Hall of Fame induction of former boxer Tom Quinn '55 where he was joined by University president Tim Healy, SJ, Alumni Association president John Rooney '48 and former boxing coach Marty Gallagher, who was inducted posthumously himself last October

Joe Lonardo '69 welcomed Victoria Schramm '12 and older brother Ben '08 along with other entering children of alums to his Georgtown home during Freshmen Move-In last August

Athletic Director Bernard Muir is flanked by past Hoyas president Maura Devaney '76 and spouse and golf alum Brian '76 at the Major golf event at TPC Sawgrass last September

Peter Hill '83 with Dean of the Colleege Chet Gillis at the Georgetown Major in September

Longtime Hoya fan and supporter John Keyser '59 and Hoop Club president Al Bozzo '85 at the Georgetown Major in September
