Hoyas Hold Off Davidson, 26-24

October 13, 2001

Washington, D.C. (October 13, 2001)--Georgetown senior Eric Speron (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) intercepted the potential game-tying two-point conversion pass in the final minute as the Hoyas held off Davidson 26-24. The Wildcats scored a touchdown with 52 seconds remaining, but Speron picked off Paul Nichols' pass to give the Hoyas their second-straight win. Earlier in the contest, Speron blocked an extra-point attempt.

Graduate student Marc Samuel (Anchorage, Ky./Ballard) made all four of his field goal attempts in the game, including what proved to be the game-winner from 41 yards out with 3:04 to play. Samuel has now made five of his six attempts this season.

The two teams traded field goals in the first quarter, but GU went ahead with 8:31 to play in the half. Punter Dave Paulus (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers) took the snap and ran 53 yards for a touchdown to give the Hoyas a 10-3 lead. Samuel kicked a field goal with just under three minutes to play to make the score 13-2 in favor of Georgetown at the half.

Davidson answered with the first two scores of the second half. Chris Costello kicked a 41-yard field goal and John Leverett ran 9 yards for a touchdown as Davidson climbed to 13-12. Speron blocked Dan Hanks' kick as GU held the lead.

Georgetown's Kurt Bennett (Burlington, Mass./Belmont Hill) answered less than a minute later when he hauled in a 65-yard touchdown pass from Sean Peterson (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill). It was Bennett's first career touchdown. Davidson came back on the next series, getting to 20-18 on Nichols' 1-yard keeper with 1:53 left in the third quarter. Samuel kicked two fourth-quarter field goals that put Georgetown up 26-18 with 3:04 left in regulation.

The Hoyas begin a three-game road trip next Saturday when they visit Bucknell in a Patriot League game. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
