WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University swimming & diving team will send eight student-athletes to the Toyota U.S. Open this week at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta. The four-day meet, held Dec. 4-7, will serve as an opportunity to qualify for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials, held in Omaha, Nebraska this summer.
DREW CARBONE
- Carbone, who qualified last year for the Olympic Trials in the 100- and 200-meter backstrokes, will compete again in those events while additionally looking to qualify in the 200-meter IM and the 200-meter freestyle.
- He currently holds the BIG EAST's top times in the 100 back (48.36) and the 200 IM (1:48.18).
- His time in the 200 back (1:45.16) is second in the conference and set the pool record at the Terrier Invitational.
SEAN DEVLIN
- Devlin will look to record a qualifying time in the 50-meter freestyle.
- He currently holds the top time in the BIG EAST in the 50 free when he touched the wall in 20.91 seconds at the Terrier Invitational last month.
NATHANIEL GOLDFARB
- Goldfarb will compete in the 100-meter breaststroke, looking to qualify for Omaha this summer.
- His time of 57.27 in the 100 breast at the Terrier Invitational is the sixth-fastest time in the BIG EAST this year.
SAMANTHA KIM
- Kim will look took to become GU's first women's Olympic qualifier since Molly Fitzpatrick (NHS'18) in 2016 as she competes in both the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke.
- Her times in both events this year rank among the top five in the BIG EAST as she has recorded times of 1:05.20 in the 100 breast and 2:21.21 in the 200 breast, a mark that ranks third in the conference.
JOSIAH LAUVER
- Lauver will compete alongside Carbone in the 200-meter freestyle.
- He had a season-best time of 1:42.81 in the 200 free at the Terrier Invitational and that time ranks 12th in the BIG EAST.
CONNOR MORIKAWA
- Morikawa will race in both breaststroke events as well as the 200-meter IM.
- He is currently second in the BIG EAST in both the 100 breast (55.53) and the 200 breast (2:00.78). He broke the school record in the 200 breast at the Terrier Invitational.
- His also set his best time in the 200 IM in Boston with a time of 1:50.71.
BRETT SHERMAN
- Sherman just missed out on qualifying for the 400-meter IM and the 400-meter freestyle at last year's meet, and will look for redemption in both events this time around.
- He currently holds the BIG EAST's top times in the 500-yard freestyle (4:27.53) and the 400 IM (3:54.86).
MICHAEL WHEELER
- Wheeler will look to qualify in three distance freestyle events as he competes in the 400-, 800- and 1,500-meter freestyles.
- His time of 4:28.57 in the 500-yard freestyle is currently second in the BIG EAST behind only Sherman and he holds the top mark in both the 1,000- (9:25.00) and 1,650-yard (15:33.20) freestyle races.
ABOUT THE MEET
- All sessions will be streamed on usaswimming.com, except for Friday's finals which will be on NBCSports.com. Saturday's finals will also be tape-delayed on NBC on Dec. 21.
- The 800 free (Wheeler) will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 4 with timed finals beginning at 6 p.m.
- The 400 free (Sherman, Wheeler), 200 IM (Carbone, Morikawa) and 50 free (Devlin) will be held on Thursday. Preliminaries will begin at 10 a,m. and the finals at 6 p.m.
- Friday's racing will consist of the 400 IM (Sherman), 200 free (Carbone, Lauver), 100 breast (Goldfarb, Kim, Morikawa) and 100 back (Carbone). The morning prelims will start at 10 a.m. while the evening finals will start at 6:50 p.m.
- Saturday will see the 1,500 free (Wheeler), 200 back (Carbone) and 200 breast (Kim, Morikawa). The morning prelims will start at 10 a.m. while the evening finals will start at 6:20 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Hoyas had a strong finish at the Terrier Invitational as the men's team finished second and the women's squad placed third.
- Carbone was named the BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week on Nov. 26 as he won three individual titles and helped lead the Hoyas to two relay victories over the three-day meet.
