Men's Soccer to Host Davidson in Home Opener on Friday

Sept. 4, 2008

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University men's soccer team will host its home opener this Friday at 3 p.m., at North Kehoe Field against Davidson College. The Hoyas are currently 2-0-0 after winning the Cal State-Northridge Tournament last weekend. This marks the first time since 2005 that the Hoyas opened with a pair of victories and back-to-back shutouts.

Georgetown is led by forward Peter Grasso (Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central) who already has two goals on the season after scoring a pair of game-winners at CSN. Grasso was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the Tournament and to the BIG EAST Honor Roll for his efforts. The senior scored two goals in just three shots over the weekend.

Also contributing on offense will be sophomore Chandler Diggs (Coppell, Texas/Coppell) who scored a goal against Fullerton and led the Hoyas in scoring as a freshman. Junior co-captain Mark Zeman (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Twp.) and senior Corey Zeller (Toms River, N.J./Toms River) also had assists in the opening tournament and look to keep the momentum going with a pair of contests this weekend.

On the defensive end of the pitch, junior Len Coleman (Basking Ridge, N.J./Pingry School) had an outstanding weekend earning Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the Tournament and BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors. Coleman and the defensive unit posted a pair of shutouts and only allowed nine shots on goal in two games.

Friday's game is the first time the Hoyas and Wildcats have met since 1987 where GU fell 2-1. Davidson is currently 1-1 on the season and have a solid group of veterans including 19 letterwinners and seven starters from last year.

The Wildcats return their second leading scorer from 2007 in Alex Caskey who led the squad in both minutes and assists as a freshman. Senior co-captain Cameron Griffin will anchor the defense that has allowed just one goal on the season.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m., on the Georgetown campus. Gametracker will be available at www.guhoyas.com for fans to follow the action online.
