Georgetown Women's Soccer Ready for George Mason Tournament This Weekend

Sept. 4, 2008

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown women's soccer team travels to Fairfax, Va. this weekend to take part in the George Mason Tournament. The Hoyas will square-off against Mississippi State on Friday at 3 p.m. and Hartford on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Hoyas are currently averaging 3.67 goals per game, third in the conference behind Notre Dame and Villanova. This statistic has been helped by the large amount of corner-kicks drawn by the Hoyas, a BIG EAST-leading 34 through three games.

Samantha Baker (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson), Toni Marie Hudson (Coral Springs, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) and Jordan (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) are ranked among the top-10 in the league in points, while Caitlin Durkee (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park) and Kelly D'Ambrisi (Trumbull, Conn./Lauralton Hall Academy) are in the top five for assists

Jordan's goal last Sunday against Ohio moved her past former Hoya standout Shara McNeill for fourth place on the all-time points list and Baker was named the BIG EAST Conference's Rookie of the Week on Monday in an announcement by league officials. Baker has stepped in as an attacking midfielder off the bench for the Hoyas and currently leads the team in goals (3) and points (6).

Georgetown is one of seven undefeated BIG EAST teams after two weeks of play and it is the first time the Hoyas have started the year 3-0-0 under the direction of head coach Dave Nolan who is in his fifth season. In fact, it is the first time GU started the season with three consecutive wins since 1995. The team is currently receiving votes in the NSCCA/adidas National Rankings and slotted third in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings.

These games will be the first meetings in program history for Georgetown and their respective opponents, Mississippi State and Hartford. In fact, this will mark the first time GU will go head-to-head with a team from the Southeastern Conference as the BIG EAST has struggled the last two years, winning only one out of seven contests. The BIG EAST is 15-0-5 against America East opponents over the last three seasons, including a 6-0-0 record this year.

Mississippi State moved to 2-1-0 on the season as it split its two matches at the inaugural Bulldog Classic on the MSU campus. The two matches closed out a three-game season-opening homestand. Senior Mary Kate Ayers enjoyed a career weekend at the event, notching her first career goal and her second career assist and her three points were a career-high.

Sophomore Hadley Gable scored her first collegiate goal, the eventual game-winner in State's 3-1 victory over Northwestern State. Junior Taryn Holland's 10 saves in the two-game span moved her into fifth on the school's all-time saves list.

Hartford split a pair of 1-0 games on its Florida road trip last week, downing Stetson University on Friday before falling at the University of Central Florida on Sunday. Senior Lauren Aldred scored her first career goal against Stetson, finding the back of the net off a direct kick.

Freshman Lauren Brodeur did her part in goal, making three saves to post her second shutout of the season. On Sunday, UCF scored in the 82nd minute to hand Hartford its first loss of the season. The goal was also the first the Hawks had allowed in 2008 as Hartford held opponents scoreless for the first 370 minutes of the season.
