June 9, 2005

Georgetown University today named Bernard M. Muir to be Director of Athletics, effective July 1. As Director of Athletics, Muir will oversee the operations of all Georgetown University intercollegiate and intramural athletic programs, which include more than 100 coaches and staff who support more than 650 student-athletes participating in 27 sports, the majority of which compete in the Big East Conference. He is the 10th person in Georgetown's history to serve as Director of Athletics.

"Bernard is a dynamic individual who will provide strong leadership to Georgetown's athletics programs and ensure our ability to recruit and retain first-rate coaches and student athletes who maintain the University's tradition of academic and athletic success," said Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia. "I look forward to the contributions he will make to our athletics programs and the lives of our student athletes in the years ahead."

Muir currently serves as Deputy Director of Athletics for Administration and Facilities at the University of Notre Dame where he oversees campus athletics facilities, game management operations, and club and intramural sports and recreation. He has served as primary administrator for a number of sports and as secondary administrator for football. He previously served as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student Welfare and Development, where he handled issues related to student-athlete recruitment, integration into campus life and academic performance. Prior to joining the University of Notre Dame, Muir held various positions at the NCAA over 8 years, including director of the Division I Men's Basketball Championship.

"I am deeply committed to the athletic competitiveness, integrity and academic focus that Georgetown is known for," said Muir. "I am excited to have this opportunity to contribute to Georgetown's great tradition of athletic and academic success."

Muir is a 1990 graduate of Brown University, where he was a four-year letter winner and co-captain of the mens' basketball team. Muir was awarded the J. Richmond Fales Trophy for his contributions to the team, earned the L. Stanley Ward Quiet Man Award, and served as the senior class marshall at his undergraduate commencement exercises. He earned a master's in sports administration and facility management from Ohio University.
