WASHINGTON - Georgetown junior men's basketball player Hollis Thompson (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola) was named the BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week on Monday after his performance in helping the Hoyas to three wins last week.
Georgetown, winners of five-straight games, is 7-1 overall after an 84-44 win over the New Jersey Institute of Technology on Saturday at Verizon Center.
Propelled by a pair of wins over top-15 teams - first a 91-88 overtime decision against then-No. 8 Memphis in the Maui Invitational followed by a thrilling 57-55 victory at then-No. 12 Alabama - the Hoyas made their first appearance of the season in both national polls. Georgetown is ranked No. 18 in the country in the Associated Press Top 25 and No. 21 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches' poll.
In three games last week, Thompson averaged 17.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 55.3 percent from the floor and 58.8 percent from three-point land.
The highlight of the week was Thompson sinking a three-pointer with 1.8 seconds to deliver Georgetown to a 57-55 win over then-No. 12 Alabama on Thursday night, ending the Crimson Tide's 24-game home court win streak. He scored 12 points and had eight rebounds in that game.
Last week in an 81-58 win over IUPUI, Thompson scored a season-high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his second career double-double. Thompson wrapped up the week with 20 points and three assists in the win over NJIT, setting a career-high with six three-point field goals in only 19 minutes.
Thompson has been a key figure in Georgetown's winning seven of its first eight games. He is second on the team in scoring with 15.0 points per game and is second on the team with 5.5 rebounds. Thompson is shooting 56.8 percent from the floor (46-of-81), including 58.8 percent (20-of-34) from three-point land.
Georgetown is back in action on Saturday, Dec. 10, hosting Howard at Verizon Center. Tipoff is slated for noon. The game will be shown live on MASN. Fans locally can tune in to Rich Chvotkin's radio call on ESPN980.
