John Thompson III Participates in Jimmy V Classic Dinner in New York

Oct. 11, 2012

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University Head Men's Basketball Coach John Thompson III was among a group of college basketball coaches who participated in the Jimmy V Classic Dinner on Wednesday night in Manhattan.

The Hoyas will play Texas in the Jimmy V Classic on Tuesday, Dec. 4 in a doubleheader at Madison Square Garden. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., with a game between Connecticut and North Carolina State following.

The Jimmy V Classic Dinner was held at Pier 60 at New York City's Chelsea Pier. With the college basketball season just days away from starting, it tipped things off by honoring the six teams participating in this year's Jimmy V Basketball Classic.

Net proceeds from the Jimmy V Classic Dinner benefited The V Foundation for Cancer Research's one million dollar grant for research of the cancers affecting 9/11 First Responders who worked at Ground Zero.

Thompson was joined at the dinner by Texas Head Coach Rick Barnes, North Carolina State Head Coach Mark Gottfried and Connecticut's Kevin Ollie. Women's coaches included Maryland's Brenda Frese and UConn's Geno Auriemma.

Thompson filmed videos for the V Foundation upon his arrival and, along with the other coaches, signed basketballs that were given out at the conclusion of the dinner.

Coaches also provided items for a silent auction, mingled with guests throughout the evening and spoke to the media about the upcoming season.

Georgetown is coming off a 2011-12 season that saw the team finish with a 24-9 overall record, make its third-straight NCAA Tournament and tie for fourth place in the BIG EAST Conference. The Hoyas have reached the NCAA Tournament in six of the last eight years and played in the postseason every season under Head Coach John Thompson III, including two NIT appearances. Georgetown, picked to finish in 10th place in the BIG EAST, posted a 12-6 league record on the way to earning a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament's Midwest Regional.

The men's basketball team officially begins its season on Friday, Oct. 12, with its annual Midnight Madness celebration on campus. The evening's festivities will include an appearance by hip hop legend Doug E. Fresh.
