WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's soccer team fell behind in a game for the first time since early September and used a furious second half to look for an equalizer, but could not as a goal midway through the first half gave Villanova a 1-0 win over the Hoyas on Friday afternoon.

The Hoyas finish the regular season with a 14-1-2 overall record and an 8-1-1 mark in the BIG EAST Conference last weekend with wins over Notre Dame (2-0) and DePaul (1-0 in overtime), the latter of which clinch at least a tie for the National Division title.

Georgetown has clinched the No. 1 seed in the National Division for the BIG EAST Tournament and earned a bye into the quarterfinals. The Hoyas will host a BIG EAST Quarterfinal match on Sunday, Oct. 28 at North Kehoe Field against a to-be-determined opponent.

Villanova, now 7-8-3 overall and 5-4-1 in the BIG EAST, clinched a spot in the league tournament and also sealed a home match in the opening round next week with the win.

"It was a game of two halves and credit to Villanova, they scored a very good goal in the first half," Head Coach Dave Nolan said. "We had great goal-scoring opportunities in the second half, 12 that I thought were really good, and just couldn't get one in."

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead when Heidi Sabatura played a ball into the box and a shot from Emily Damstrom beat redshirt freshman goalkeeper Emma Newins (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) to the lower far post at 28:18.

Trailing 1-0 going into the second half, the Hoyas dominated play, out-shooting the Wildcats, 16-1, and holding a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore forward Jessica Clinton (Avon, Mass./Thayer Academy), who took a career-high and team-high seven shots, had one cleared off the line by a Villanova defender in the 59th minute and another saved by Villanova goalkeeper Jami Kranich in the 62nd minute.

A shot from defender Claire Magliola (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) was saved in the 66th minute and then after a corner kick from sophomore Audra Ayotte (Marlborough, Conn./RHAM), a header from freshman Marina Paul () went just high in the 68th minute.

The Blue & Gray continued to press Villanova and had six shots - from leading scorers sophomore midfielder Daphne Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills) and junior forward Kaitlin Brenn (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville), as well as one from Clinton - either blocked or saved in a nine-minute span.

Georgetown out-shot Villanova, 19-12, overall and had an 11-5 advantage in corner kicks. Newins made four saves.
