Georgetown to Play at Virginia Tech on Sunday in NCAA Tournament First Round

Nov. 10, 2012

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's soccer team hit the road this morning, traveling to Blacksburg, Va., where the Hoyas will face Virginia Tech in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 11. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.

The Hoyas enter the NCAA Tournament with a 15-3-3 overall record after advancing to the championship game of the BIG EAST Tournament, where they lost to Marquette, 1-0, last Sunday. GU won the BIG EAST National Division title, posting an 8-1-1 record in league play.

This is Georgetown's third appearance in the NCAA Tournament, where they have a 2-2-1 record. The team made its first appearance in 2007, falling to William & Mary, 2-1, in the first round. In 2010, the Blue & Gray advanced to the Elite Eight after wins over Siena (5-1), Maryland (1-1 tie, a win in penalty kicks) and Minnesota (1-0). The run ended with a 2-0 loss to Ohio State.

Virginia Tech enters NCAA Tournament play with a 13-5-1 overall record, including a 4-5-1 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Hokies, who have made five-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2011 NCAA Tournament, posting wins over West Virginia and Texas A&M before losing to Virginia.

The Hokies have four players who have reached double figures in scoring with Shannon Mayrose leading the team with 18 points and Ashley Meier second with 17 points. Mayrose and Meier are tied for the team lead in goals with seven apiece. Goalkeeper Dayle Colpitts has an 8-5-1 record and a 1.06 goals-against average.

"It's probably a game neither of us would have wanted in the first round," Georgetown Head Coach Dave Nolan said "For the caliber of both of our teams, this should be a second or third round game. They are a very good team."

Georgetown is led by a balanced attack on offense and defense, with the Hoyas ranked No. 23 in the country in scoring offense (2.19 goals per game) and No 15 in the country in goals-against average (0.59).

The Hoyas are led by BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Daphne Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills), who has a team-best and school record 41 points. Corboz, who was also an All-BIG EAST First Team selection, has scored a school record 17 goals and has seven assists.

She is joined by All-BIG EAST Second Team selection junior forward Kaitlin Brenn (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville), who is second on the team in scoring with 27 points (nine goals, nine assists).

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Emma Newins (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run), an All-BIG EAST Rookie and All-BIG EAST Second Team selection, has recorded a school-best 12 shutouts this season and has a 0.58 goals-against average.

The Hoya backline, which limited BIG EAST opponents to only two goals in 10 league games, has been led by junior Emily Menges (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), an All-BIG EAST First Team selection.

This will be the third meeting between Georgetown and Virginia Tech, with the Hoyas leading the head-to-head series, 2-0. The last time the teams played was during the 2003 season, a 1-0 Georgetown road. The Blue & Gray won the team's first meeting 3-0 in 2001.

Against teams from the ACC, Georgetown carries an 0-9-1 overall record, with eight of those matches coming against Boston College during the infancy of the Hoya program. The last time Georgetown played a team from the ACC was during the second round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament, when the Hoyas beat Maryland in penalty kicks en route to an appearance in the Elite Eight that season.
