No. 13/14 Georgetown Hosts Connecticut in BIG EAST Showdown

WASHINGTON - The No. 13/14 Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (5-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) will host the University of Connecticut Huskies (6-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) in a Friday afternoon matchup at Multi-Sport Field. The opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m. A webcast and live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com, additionally, the game will be televised tape delayed locally on Verizon FiOS.

Georgetown defeated local-rival American University on Wednesday evening, 17-11, as junior midfielder Kelsi Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md./Notre Dame Prep) led the way with four goals and an assist. Prior to Wednesday, the Blue & Gray finished off a tough stretch of the season playing five ranked opponents in six games. The Hoyas won two of those defeating No. 2/2 North Carolina and then-No. 8/9 Penn.

On Monday, junior midfielder Sophia Thomas (Lutherville, Md./Maryvale Prep) was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week. It is the first player of the week award for the Blue & Gray this season.

Thomas earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors after amassing 11 points, including 10 goals in a 1-1 week. The junior scored a career-high six goals in the win over Penn. Thomas also scored a team-leading four goals in the loss to Loyola. She also totaled three draw controls in the two games.

Thomas and freshman attacker Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) are currently leading the team in scoring with 26 and 22 points, respectively. Bozel and junior attacker Dina Jackson (Potomac, Md./Bullis)are third and fourth with 19 and 18 points on the year.

Senior defender Kelly Barnes (St. David's, Pa./Radnor) has 15 caused turnovers and 24 ground balls. Bozel has notched 21 draw controls. Sophomore goalkeeper Barb Black (Ruxton, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) has tallied a squad-best 50 saves.

Connecticut fell to No. 2/2 Syracuse on Saturday, 20-8. Sophomores Lauren Kahn and Kacey Pippitt each added two goals but, Cuse was too much for the Huskies. Prior to that loss, UConn had won four in a row.

Senior attacker M.E. Lapham has a team-best 33 points with 25 goals and eight assists on the season. Senior attacker Kiersten Tupper and Kahn round out the top three with 30 and 25 points, respectively. Junior goalkeeper Brittney Testa has appeared in eight games with 69 saves to her credit.

Georgetown is 11-0 all-time against the Huskies with a mark of 6-0 at home. Last season, the Blue & Gray defeated UConn, 14-12, in Connecticut as Thomas scored six goals. In the last meeting at Multi-Sport Field, GU won by a score of 18-9.
