Hoyas Fall to Rutgers in First Game of Series

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team (14-18, 0-1 BIG EAST) lost an early lead to drop the first of three against Rutgers (14-15, 3-3 BIG EAST) in Piscataway, N.J. this afternoon. A doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon on Sunday.

Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) was hit by a pitch to get on first, and Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) hit a single to put two on base for Georgetown with two outs. Cara Savarese (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) racked up two RBI on a single that advanced Lowe and Carter home to give the Hoyas a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

Savarese led all Georgetown batters going two-for-three. Rachel Nersesian(San Leandro, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) and Elyse Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) both went one-for-two.

The Blue & Gray held on to the 2-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth when Rutgers rallied back with three runs to take the lead. Jennifer Harabedian hit a homerun with one on base to even the score. A passed ball with a runner on third gave the Scarlet Knights the go ahead run. Alyssa Landrith pitched nine strikeouts for Rutgers to keep Georgetown from scoring after the first inning.

Lauren O'Leary took the loss for the Hoyas in six innings with three strikeouts.
