WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team (14-20, 0-3 BIG EAST) concluded its first BIG EAST road trip with two losses (3-0, 8-0) against Rutgers (16-3, 5-3 BIG EAST) on Sunday afternoon. The Hoyas struggled to get going offensively, recording five hits in the doubleheader.
In the 2 p.m. contest, Megan Hyson
(Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) led off getting hit by a pitch and eventually rounded the bases to third with a sacrifice bunt from Taylor Koenig
(Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and a fly out from Shikara Lowe
(Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit). Hyson was left on base. Elyse Graziano
(Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) came back in the second inning with a single to center, and Mackensey Carter
(Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) rounded out Georgetown hitting for the afternoon with a double in the fourth.
The Scarlet Knights scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Jackie Bates was walked to give Rutgers the 1-0 lead on an unearned run. Ashley Allen followed up with a single down the third base line to bring two more runners home to secure the 3-0 win.
In the last game of the series, Georgetown generated most of its hits in the first two innings. Lowe hit a single in the first with Rachel Nersesian
(San Leandro, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) and Graziano both hitting singles in the second. The Hoyas loaded the bases in the top of the third but did not score.
Rutgers scored one run in the second, two in the third and fourth and wrapped up the game with three runs in the fifth.
The Georgetown softball team will play UMBC (16-15, 1-2 America East) in Baltimore at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3. The Hoyas will return to the Hilltop for a BIG EAST series against DePaul (18-11, 2-1 BIG EAST) at Guy Mason Field from April 6-7.
