PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Georgetown University softball team (15-25, 0-8 BIG EAST) could not keep up with Pittsburgh's offense, as the Panthers (22-17, 5-6 BIG EAST) totaled 11 runs in the second, third and fourth inning to defeat the Hoyas, 11-0 in five innings in game two of a BIG EAST Doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore first baseman Madeleine Giaquinto had the Hoyas only hit and freshman Megan Hyson took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits over 1.1 innings.
Hyson allowed one hit in the bottom of the first inning, but stranded the runner. Pittsburgh, struck quickly in the second inning with back-to-back home runs, before the Hoyas went to the bullpen. Overall, Pittsburgh scored six runs in the second inning, then added four runs in the third and another run in the fourth to take a commanding 11-0 lead.
Giaquinto broke up a no-hitter in the top of the fifth inning, though the Hoyas were unable to bring her around the bases, as the game ended after five-innings, with the Panthers claiming an 11-0 victory to sweep the doubleheader.
Georgetown returns to action on Saturday, April 14 when they travel to New York, N.Y. to take on St. John's for a three-game weekend series. GU returns home to host Providence College on Saturday, April 21.
