Georgetown Men's Golf Set for BIG EAST Championship this Weekend

April 26, 2012

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's golf team departs this weekend, bound for Florida, where they will begin play in the BIG EAST Championship on Sunday, April 29. The BIG EAST Championship will be held on the Watson Course at the Reunion Resort & Club in Orlando, Fla. from Sunday, April 29 to Tuesday, May 1.

Georgetown enters the BIG EAST Championship as the No. 6 seed in the 12-team team. Notre Dame is the No. 1 seed, followed by USF, Louisville, St. John's, Villanova, with the Hoyas following in the sixth spot. All seeds are based on Golfstat rankings.

"The guys know it is going to take three solid rounds to compete with front runners, Notre Dame, St. John's, Louisville and South Florida," Head Coach Tommy Hunter said. "We are excited to get down there and for the first ball to get in the air."

Hunter and his squad went through final days of preparation this week and the team's lineup will include senior captains Brian Dorfman (Greenwood Village, Colo./Cherry Creek) and Taylor Hall (Roswell, Ga./Trinity Catholic), junior Justin Edwards (Westlake Village, Calif./Westlake Village), along with sophomore Charlie Von Arentschildt (Scottsdale, Ariz./Deerfield Academy) and freshman Greg Podufal (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep).

"Brian and Taylor will lead the way," Hunter said. "They are experienced and know what it takes to succeed in an event like this. Greg has competed in every event this year and certainly is battle tested as is Charlie, who had a terrific second place finish at Princeton two weeks ago. Justin continues to gain confidence in each competitive round he plays."

Georgetown has enjoyed a strong 2011-12 season, with four top-five finishes and six among the top-10 overall, including a second place finish at the Princeton Invitational on April 3.

Dorfman and Hall are the last remaining players from the 2010 BIG EAST Championship team. Dorfman leads the team in stroke average at 73.19, has won two events (the Maryland Intercollegiate and the Bearcat Invitational), four top-10 finishes and six among the top-20. Hall, meanwhile, is third on the team with a 74.54 average and enjoyed a solid spring, posting two top-30 finishes, including an 11th place showing at the Princeton Invitational.

Podufal is one of only three players, along with Dorfman and Hall, to play in every team round this season. The freshman is fourth on the team in stroke average at 74.69 in 26 rounds. After an up-and-down fall, he has two top-20 finishes in the last five outings, including a ninth place finish at Princeton.

Edwards moved into the lineup earlier in the spring season and has a 77.18 average in 11 rounds, while von Arentschildt, who missed most of the fall due to an injury, has posted a 74.91 average in 11 rounds. He tied for 16th at the Wildcat Invitational and finished in second at Princeton.

The teams will play a practice round on Saturday. The tournament starts on Sunday and Georgetown tees off at 9:40 a.m., playing alongside Louisville and Rutgers, the No. 12 seed. Team standings will determine tee times over the final two rounds.
