Georgetown Falls to Louisville in Oak Ridge

May 2, 2012

Georgetown Women's Rowing traveled to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, this past Saturday for a dual race against the University of Louisville. The race conditions were very warm and near perfect on the course with a slight building headwind throughout the races. First to race against the Cardinals was the Hoya Varsity 8. Despite not having any amplification due to a shorted wire in the cox box, the Hoyas were unfazed. They focused in and raced well, falling to Louisville by 5 seconds. "I'm proud of our team's ability to stay focused on our goals and the steps we need to take to make progress as a program," commented Head Coach Miranda Paris. "Each week and each race marks a step forward for us. We'll just see how many steps we can take before Big East."

The Second Varsity 8 raced next in a time of 7:20.12. The Hoyas came off the line very quickly, but were not able to push through the aggressive Louisville crew, falling by 14 seconds to the Cardinals, and beat the Cardinal Third Varsity 8 by 26 seconds.

The Varsity 4 took both Cardinal V4's off the line. Leading Louisville through the 500-meter mark it looked like the Hoyas were going to take one away. As the crews pulled to the 1000-meter mark, Louisville executed a move, separating them from Georgetown. "The margin did not represent what we accomplished today," said assistant coach Steve Full. "The girls were incredibly focused and really brought the race to Louisville off the line. I know we will continue to build off of these accomplishments in our last stretch before Big East."

The Hoyas finished 13 seconds back from the top Varsity 4, but 30 seconds ahead of the Cardinal V4B.

Next up for the Hoyas is the Big East Championship on May 13 on Mercer Lake in Windsor, NJ. Follow them on Twitter @HoyaRowing.
