Georgetown Picked to Finish Second in BIG EAST Conference

NEW YORK - The Georgetown University men's basketball team was picked to finish in second place in the BIG EAST preseason poll, voted on by the league's coaches and announced on Wednesday morning at the annual Media Day, held at the Lighthouse in Chelsea Piers on the west side of New York City.

The Hoyas received two first place votes and had 70 points in the poll, just behind preseason league favorite Marquette, who had four first place votes and 74 points. Creighton had one first place vote and 61 points and was picked third, with Villanova fourth and St. John's fifth.

Senior guard Markel Starks (Accokeek, Md./Georgetown Prep) was one of five players selected to the Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team. Creighton senior Doug McDermott was named the Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year.

Starks, a senior captain, was one of five players named to the All-BIG EAST Third Team as a junior during the 2012-13 season. Starks was second on the team in scoring with 12.8 points per game, and led the team in assists (96, 3.0 per game) and with 63 three-point field goals. He ranked sixth in the BIG EAST in three-point field goal percentage (41.7%) and was 12th in the league in three-point field goals made. Starks reached double figures in scoring 21 times last season, including four games with at least 20 points.

Georgetown finished the 2012-13 season with a 25-7 record and earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Hoyas won a share of the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship and were the No. 1 seed in the tournament after posting a 14-4 record in league play. The Hoyas were ranked No. 8 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll and No. 8 in the USA Today Coaches' poll and closed out the regular season with 12 wins in 13 games.
