No. 11 Georgetown Hosts Pirates on Saturday

Oct. 4, 2013

WASHINGTON - The No. 11 Georgetown University men's soccer squad (7-2-1, 0-0-1 BIG EAST) will host the Seton Hall University Pirates (3-4-2, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) on Saturday at Shaw Field in a 1 p.m., BIG EAST Conference matchup. The Hoyas closed out nonconference play on Tuesday with a 1-0 victory over American University.

Freshman defender Joshua Yaro (Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School) headed in a Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North) corner kick in the 85th minute on Tuesday to down the Eagles, 1-0, and finish nonconference play with a mark of 7-2. It was Yaro's first-career goal.

On Monday, junior goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week for his performance last weekend against then-No. 3 Creighton University.

Gomez made six saves in a double-overtime draw against the Bluejays on Saturday at Shaw Field. The junior managed the defense and came up with a number of game-saving stops to keep the match even in Georgetown's BIG EAST Conference opener. The award marked his third-career honor as the conference's Goalkeeper of the Week and his second weekly award of the season. It was also the third weekly award for the Blue & Gray so far this year.

Sophomore forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph's) leads the team in scoring with 14 points on six goals and two assists. Senior captain Neumann is second with three goals and two assists for eight points, while freshman Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) has a goal and a team-high four assists for six points.

Gomez has six shutouts on the season, the Hoyas have seven overall, and has tallied 30 saves so far this year.

The Pirates put a stop to a four-game skid thanks to a Kai Greene header 1:27 into double overtime that lifted SHU to a 2-1 win over Rider University on Wednesday night at Ben Cohen Field. Seton Hall was in firm control for most of the match but still needed to come from behind against the Broncs, getting a goal from senior midfielder Max Garcia in the second half and from Greene in the second extra period.

Samuel Geiler is leading the team with four goals and one assist for nine points. Garcia is second with three goals and one assist for seven points. Goalkeeper Julian Spindler has 20 saves on the season with one shutout to his credit.

Georgetown is 15-14-2 all-time against the Pirates, and 6-1-1 all-time under Head Coach Brian Wiese. Last season, the Hoyas faced the Pirates in back-to-back games to end the season. GU won in New Jersey, 2-0, on goals by Allen and Ian Christianson. In the season finale in the District, the Blue & Gray clinched a share of the BIG EAST Blue Division Regular Season Championship with a 1-0 victory on a goal from Allen.

Kickoff on Saturday at Shaw Field is scheduled for 1 p.m. Live stats and a webcast featuring Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser will be available at
