Smith-Rivera, Starks Help Lead Georgetown Past Wright State, 88-70

WASHINGTON - Sophomore guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) scored 25 points and senior guard Markel Starks (Accokeek, Md./Georgetown Prep) added 23 points as the Georgetown men's basketball team opened up a 19-point halftime lead en route to an 88-70 win over Wright State in its home opener in front of 7,350 fans at Verizon Center Wednesday night.

It was the first win of the season for the Hoyas, who improve to 1-1, while Wright State falls to 1-1. The win in the home opener was the eighth-straight year GU has won its home opener under Head Coach John Thompson III.

Smith-Rivera scored 25 points, including 17 in the first half, as he hit 8-of-12 shots from the floor and 3-of-4 from three-point land, to with three assists and five rebounds. Starks, who hit 7-of-14 shots from the floor and three three-pointers, scored 21 points and handed out a game-high six assists.

Eleven different players scored for the Hoyas as the team connected on 10 three-pointers after hitting only 1-of-15 in its season-opening loss to Oregon on Friday. The Hoys shot 45.5 percent from three-point land (10-of-22) and were 50.0 percent from the field overall (28-of-56).

Freshman forward Reggie Cameron (Hackensack, N.J./Hudson Catholic) scored nine points, hitting three first half three-pointers, senior forward Nate Lubick (Southborough, Mass./St. Marks) added six points, eight rebounds and three assists and junior center Joshua Smith (Kent, Wash./Kentwood/UCLA) chipped in six points and four rebounds

The Hoyas jumped out to a 19-point lead at the half, 50-31, after a hot-shooting first half as the team connected on 56.7 percent of their shots (17-of-30), including a blistering 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from three-point range.

The teams matched baskets in the opening two minutes of the game, but a 14-2 run over 4:02, with Smith-Rivera scoring six points, gave GU a 17-7 lead after a jumper from Trawick with 14:04 on the clock. After a basket from Wright State's Matt Vest, the Hoyas connected on three-straight three-pointers and took a 28-11 lead on the second of two three's from Cameron.

Smith-Rivera, who scored 17 points in the first half, hit the second of his two first half three-pointers with 6:39 to play in the half and gave Georgetown a 39-19 lead. A three-pointer from Starks on the next possession gave the Hoyas their biggest lead, 42-19, with 6;07 left in the half.

A jumper from Smith-Rivera with 34 seconds left gave the Blue & Gray a 50-31 lead at the break. The 50 points in the first half were the most by the Hoyas in a half since scoring 52 in the second half of a 75-45 win over South Florida

Georgetown is back on the road again next week, traveling to play in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off from Nov. 21-24. The Hoyas open by playing Northeastern on Wednesday, Nov. 21. Tipoff on ESPN is slated for 1:30 p.m.
