WASHINGTON - No. 17 Georgetown University men's soccer players Joshua Yaro (Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School) and Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) were both named BIG EAST Players of the Week on Monday. Yaro was named the Defensive Player of the Week, while Basuljevic was the Rookie of the Week. Additionally, senior goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Yaro led the Hoya defense to a 1-0 victory at No. 2 Creighton, giving the Hoyas three critical points in the BIG EAST standings. He and the GU back line held Creighton to four shots on goal. The Bluejays finished the game with nine shots, well below their BIG EAST-best 15.47 per game.
This is Yaro's third BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week award this season and of his career. It is the fifth Defensive Player of the Week honor for the Hoyas in 2014.
Basuljevic's second-half strike was the difference in lifting Georgetown to a 1-0 victory at Creighton. Basuljevic's third goal of the season came in the 73rd minute when he beat CU keeper Connor Sparrow from eight yards out.
This marks Basuljevic's first-career honor and the first BIG EAST Rookie of the Week award for the Blue & Gray this season.
Gomez had four saves and the shutout in the Creighton victory. It marked his eighth shutout of the season.
This is Gomez's third nod to the honor roll this season and the 10th of his career. It is the sixth honor roll award for the Blue & Gray this season.
Georgetown hosts the No. 16 Xavier University Musketeers on Wednesday at 2 p.m., at Shaw Field. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
