WASHINGTON - The No. 13 Georgetown University men's soccer squad will host the No. 9 Xavier University Musketeers in a BIG EAST Conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Shaw Field. The Hoyas are currently 8-3-4 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play. Wednesday will be GU's second-consecutive game against a top 10 opponent.
On Monday, sophomore defender Joshua Yaro (Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School) and freshman midfielder Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) were both named BIG EAST Players of the Week. Yaro was named the Defensive Player of the Week, while Basuljevic was the Rookie of the Week. Additionally, senior goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Yaro led the Hoya defense to a 1-0 victory at No. 2 Creighton, giving the Hoyas three critical points in the BIG EAST standings. He and the GU back line held Creighton to four shots on goal. The Bluejays finished the game with nine shots, well below their BIG EAST-best 15.47 per game.
Basuljevic's second-half strike was the difference in lifting Georgetown to a 1-0 victory at Creighton. Basuljevic's third goal of the season came in the 73rd minute when he beat CU keeper Connor Sparrow from eight yards out.
Gomez had four saves and the shutout in the Creighton victory. It marked his eighth shutout of the season.
Junior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) leads the team and the conference in scoring with 20 points on nine goals and two assists. Sophomore forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) is second on the team with ten points and a league-best six assists, while Basuljevic is third with six points on three goals. Gomez has eight shutouts on the season and has tallied 38 saves so far this year.
Jalen Brown scored in the 38th minute as Xavier picked up a big road win, 1-0, over No. 15 Marquette on Saturday at Valley Fields. The Musketeers (10-3-2, 4-0-2 BIG EAST) moved their BIG EAST-leading unbeaten streak to nine with the win, snapping a 10-match unbeaten streak by the Golden Eagles on their home field.
Following a 1-1 double OT result against Creighton last Saturday, the Musketeers picked up a result against a second consecutive top-15 opponent for the first time in program history. With the result, XU moved to 14 points in league play and is now tied with Providence for first-place in the BIG EAST.
The Hoyas are 0-1 all-time against the Musketeers. Last season, Georgetown fell, 2-1, in Cincinnati. Allen scored the lone Hoya goal on an assist from Bakie Goodman (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View School for the Gifted).
Kickoff is scheduled for Wednesday at 2 p.m., at Shaw Field. Live stats and a webcast featuring Ryan Sakamoto and Brendan "Tugboat" Thomas will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
