Sophomore Grace Damaska Named BIG EAST Player of the Week

Oct. 6, 2014 WASHINGTON - Georgetown University sophomore women's soccer player Grace Damaska (Milton, Ga./Blessed Trinity) was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after helping to lead the Hoyas to a pair of wins over the weekend.

Georgetown, unbeaten in its last six games, improved to 8-2-3 overall and 3-0-1 in the BIG EAST with a 4-2 win over Butler on Thursday and a 1-0 win over Providence on Sunday. The Blue & Gray are ranked No. 16 in the country by TopDrawerSoccer.com.

Damaska came off the bench on Thursday against Butler and provided an immediate spark, recording her first career hat trick to help the Hoyas come back from a 1-0 first half deficit and later broke a 2-all tie in the second half.

After Butler tied the game at 2-all on Thursday, Head Coach Dave Nolan made a substitution, with Damaska entering the game again. Seconds after she entered, senior midfielder Daphne Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills) held possession of the ball and dribbled toward the end line with Butler defenders flanking her. Corboz slotted a pass from the near post to the box, where Damaska was awaiting alone and deposited the ball to the lower far post, giving GU a 3-2 lead at 58:20.

The lead grew to 4-2 when Damaska netted her third goal of the game in the 68th minute. A foul just past midfield resulted in a free kick. Corboz took the kick and sent a long ball to the box, where Damaska headed it high into the goal, giving GU a 4-2 lead at 67:18.

Damaska, who scored in the first half to give GU a 2-1 lead, is third on the team in scoring with four goals and one assist for nine points.

Georgetown closes out a three-game homestand next Sunday, Oct. 12, hosting BIG EAST Conference rival Marquette at Shaw Field. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. The game will be shown live on the BIG EAST Digital Network, with Tom Kolker calling the play-by-play and Tom Greaser serving as the color analyst.
