WASHINGTON - BIG EAST contests at St. John's and Providence this weekend wrap up a five-match road trip for the Georgetown volleyball team as the Hoyas head into the final weeks of the regular season. First serve at St. John's is set for 7 p.m. on Friday night in Queens, N.Y. before the Blue & Gray head to Providence for a 3 p.m. matchup with the Friars on Saturday afternoon.
The Hoyas (9-18, 3-11 BIG EAST) were swept in a pair of road conference matches last weekend at Butler and Xavier. On Saturday versus the Musketeers, Terese Cannon (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) finished with a match-high 11 kills as well as a team and career-high 11 digs to complete her first-collegiate double-double.
For the season, Georgetown is led offensively by Cannon, who is averaging 3.12 kills per set, ranking 10th in the BIG EAST. Dani White (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) averages 2.39 kills per set and leads GU with 1.00 blocks per set. Alex Johnson (Tampa, Fla./Plant) has 24 service aces, an average of 0.26 per set, to lead the Hoyas and rank eighth in the conference. Since taking over the setting responsibilities on October 10, at Villanova, Casey Speer (Durham, N.C./Riverside) is averaging 10.31 assists per set.
St. John's sits at 18-11 overall and has a 7-7 mark in conference play. Last month, the Red Storm defeated the Hoyas, 3-1 (25-18, 20-25. 25-18, 25-19), at McDonough Arena. Karin Palgutova and Aleksandra Wachowicz are second and third in the BIG EAST with 4.32 and 3.83 kills per set, respectively. Wachowicz is also second in the conference with .37 service aces per set. Deniz Mutlugil leads the BIG EAST with an average of 10.77 assists per set.
Providence enters the weekend with a 5-23 overall record. Last weekend, the Friars won their first BIG EAST match of the season, 3-2 over DePaul, and sit at 1-13 in conference play. Earlier this season, the Hoyas swept Providence 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-22) on the Hilltop. Kayla Fitzgerald leads the Friars with an average of 2.73 kills per set. Jordan Wiesler is averaging 8.07 assists per set while Michelle Cruz is second in the BIG EAST with 4.98 digs per set.
Georgetown will return to McDonough Arena next weekend for the final two matches of the 2014 season. The Hoyas will play host to Seton Hall (Friday, 8 p.m.) and Villanova (2 p.m.).
