WASHINGTON - Senior Joshua Smith (Kent, Wash./Kentwood/UCLA) scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Georgetown used a strong second half in a 78-62 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Monday at Verizon Center.

Georgetown (2-0) scored the first six points to start the second half to break a 34-all stalemate and never looked back as the Islanders (1-1) remained winless against current BIG EAST teams.

Smith connected on 8-of-12 shots from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free throw line to go with 12 rebounds for his first double-double at Georgetown and the fifth of his career.

Senior guard Aaron Bowen (Jacksonville, Fla./QEA [N.C.]) tied a career-high with 13 points and had five steals, while senior forward Mikael Hopkins (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha) had 12 points and seven rebounds and freshman forward L.J. Peak (Gaffney, S.C./Gaffney) added 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Georgetown shot 55.2 percent from the floor in the second half (16-of-29) and out-scored the Islanders, 44-28, in the second half.

A jumper from Peak to open the second half followed by back-to-back baskets from senior forward Jabril Trawick (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends) gave the lead for good at 40-34 and forced TAMU-CC to take a timeout just 92 seconds into the second half.

The GU lead was down to five points, 48-43, after free throws from TAMU-CC's John Jordan with 14:09, but the Hoyas used a 12-2 run over 3:35 and took a 60-45 lead on a three-pointer from sophomore forward Reggie Cameron (Hackensack, N.J./Hudson Catholic).

The lead never fell below double digits and Georgetown took its biggest lead of the game, 76-54, on a layup from Peak with 3:28 to play in the game.

The first half was a back and forth affair featuring four ties and 11 lead changes. TAMU-CC used a 12-2 run early in the game to take a 126 lead on a three-pointer from Bryce Douvier, but a 9-2 response from GU gave the Hoyas a 15-14 lead on a three-pointer from freshman guard Tre Campbell (Washington, D.C./St. John's College HS). The Islanders came back with a 9-2 spurt and again took a six-point lead, 23-16, on Douvier free throws.

The Hoyas out-scored TAMU-CC, 10-5, over the final 4:14 of the first half and went into the break tied at 34-all after free throws from junior guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Oak Hill).

The Hoyas finished the game shooting 50.9 percent from the floor (27-of-53), were 4-of-12 from three-point land (33.3%) and hit 66.7 percent of their free throws (14-of-16).

Georgetown has now won 51-straight games against non-league opponents at Verizon Center.

The Hoyas close out a three-game homestand to open the season on Saturday, Nov. 22, hosting Robert Morris at Verizon Center. Tip-off is slated for noon and the game will be shown live on Fox Sports 2 and can be heard locally on ESPN 980 AM.
