WASHINGTON - The eighth-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer squad will host the Old Dominion University Monarchs on Sunday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Shaw Field at 1 p.m. The Hoyas are 12-4-4 on the season and earned a bye in the first round of the tournament. The Monarchs defeated St. Francis Brooklyn on Thursday night to advance and enter the game with a mark of 13-6-1.
Georgetown's NCAA Tournament berth is the fourth under Head Coach Brian Wiese. The Hoyas have been to the tournament on five previous occasions. Last season, Georgetown fell in the Sweet 16 to Michigan State, 1-0.
In 2012, the squad was the national runner up falling to Indiana, 1-0, in the national championship game. Prior to that season, the program had never moved beyond the second round of the tournament with previous appearances in 2010, 1997 and 1994.
The Hoyas are 6-4-2 overall in the NCAA Tournament and 4-1 in their opening game.
Sophomore defender Joshua Yaro (Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) was the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year earlier this season. Yaro and junior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) were both unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST honorees, while seniors Tyler Rudy (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves), along with junior Keegan Rosenberry (Ronks, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) and sophomore Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) were selected to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Basuljevic and classmate Christopher Lema (Ridgefield, N.J./St. Stephen's Episcopal School) earned spots on the BIG EAST All-Rookie Squad.
Allen leads the team in scoring with 23 points on 10 goals and three assists. Muyl and Basuljevic are second on the team with 10 points apiece. Muyl has two goals and a team-best six assists, while Basuljevic has posted five goals including three game winners. Gomez has 10 shutouts on the season and has tallied 47 saves so far this year.
ODU advanced to the second round after defeating St. Francis Brooklyn, 3-0, on Thursday. Sidney Rivera had two goals as the Monarchs tallied their fifth shutout of the season. Old Dominion received an automatic berth into the tournament after winning the Conference USA Tournament Championship.
Georgetown is 2-3 all-time against the Monarchs after meeting in the second round of the NCAA Tournament a season ago. The Hoyas are 2-2 at home including last year's win and a 3-2 victory in 1998. Last season, Georgetown downed ODU, 3-0, at Shaw Field. Cole Seiler (Anderson, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal School), Bakie Goodman (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View School for the Gifted) and Muyl all scored for the Blue & Gray.
Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., at Shaw Field. Tickets will be available at the gate.
The game will be broadcast free on GUHoyas.com with Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser calling the action. Live stats will also be available through GU's athletic website.
The winner of Sunday's match advances to the third round on Nov. 30. The Hoyas have secured home-field advantage for their first two rounds.
