Men's Tennis Defeats Mary Washington, 6-1

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown men's tennis team (6-8, 0-0 BIG EAST) defeated the University of Mary Washington (12-4), a Division III school, by the score of 6-1 on Sunday in Fredericksburg, Va. in a match that was recently added to the Hoyas' schedule.

The Hoyas grabbed the doubles point, 2-1, with a pair of victories. The Georgetown pair of junior John Brosens (Bedford, N.Y./Brunswick School) and freshman Jordan Portner (Ellicott, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) won on the No. 2 court while sophomore Daniel Khanin (Baldwin, N.Y./Pendleton) and freshman Max Novak (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School) notched the other doubles win on the No. 3 court.

With the momentum of the doubles point, the men won five out of six singles match to grab the 6-1 win.

Khanin, last week's BIG EAST Player of the Week, won his seventh No. 1 singles dual match of the season over Mary Washington's Tyler Carey, 6-4, 7-5. The sophomore improved his singles record to 7-7, all from the No. 1 spot.

Junior Alex Tropiano (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) won in the No. 2 position for the Hoyas on Sunday. He defeated Alex Blakhim, 7-6(2), 6-2, for his first win from the No. 2 singles spot. It marked Tropiano's fourth-straight victory, with the last three coming from the No. 3 and 4 positions.

Georgetown freshman Jack Murphy (Coronado, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, from the No. 3 spot. He now owns an 8-4 singles record on the dual season.

Brosens defeated Mary Washington's Evan Charles, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the only three-set decision on Sunday from the No. 4 spot for the Hoyas.

Portner, a freshman, won his first collegiate singles match with a straight-set decision over David Lunding-Johansson of Mary Washington, 6-4, 6-4.

Georgetown returns to action when the squad hosts Xavier on Fri., April 4 in the Hoyas' first BIG EAST matchup of the season. Play is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. ET on the McDonough Outdoor Tennis Complex on Georgetown's campus. The Blue & Gray are also tabbed to host Connecticut the following day, Sat., April 5 at noon ET on campus.
