WASHINGTON - The Georgetown softball team (19-18, 7-5 BIG EAST) dropped the final game of a three-game series in Chicago to BIG EAST foe DePaul (29-8, 10-0 BIG EAST) on Sunday afternoon at Cacciatore Stadium, 9-1 in five innings. The Hoyas dropped all three games at DePaul this weekend. It was the team's first three-game losing streak since mid-March at the UCLA/CSUN Invitational.
DePaul's Kristen Verdun, who the Hoyas faced in all three games, started her second game of the weekend in the circle and took a no-hit shutout into the top of the fifth inning.
In the fifth inning, Georgetown junior Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake ) was hit by pitch for the first baserunner on the day. Sophomore Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) then advanced Hyson to second on a fielder's choice. With a runner in scoring position, senior Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community ) collected the first and only single for the Hoyas as she scored Hyson for the lone run on the afternoon.
DePaul immediately made a pitching change after the Anttila RBI-single and quietly collected the final two outs of the game.
The game ended after the fifth inning due to the run-rule as the Blue Demons led 9-1.
GU junior Lauren O'Leary (L, 9-9, La Canada, Calif./La Canada) took the loss on the afternoon as she gave up seven earned runs across her four innings.
DePaul scored two runs in the first inning and added seven more in the fifth. DePaul's Verdun lead off the fifth with a home run as the Blue Demons tallied five more hits in game-deciding inning.
One hit is tied for the lowest team total this season. Georgetown was held to one hit at Florida Gulf Coast University in the second game of the year.
It also marked only the third time on the year that Georgetown did not draw a walk. Georgetown's 127 walks through 37 games ranks second in the BIG EAST.
The Hoyas are in action next weekend when the squad hosts the Butler Bulldogs in a three-game, BIG EAST series at Guy Mason Field in Washington, D.C. Play begins on Sat., April 18 with a doubleheader commencing at 1 p.m. ET followed by a single game the following day, Sun., April 19 at noon ET.
