BETHESDA, Md. - The Georgetown baseball team rallied from a four-run deficit, but Xavier score six runs over the final two innings to defeat the Hoyas 11-6 Sunday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field in a BIG EAST matchup.
Will Brown (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) started and had his second consecutive solid outing. He went six innings giving five runs, though only one was earned. Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area) had three hits, including two doubles, in the leadoff position and scored a pair of runs. Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) and Steve Anderson (Albany, N.Y./Northfield Mt. Hermon Prep (Mass.)/Guilderland) were each on base three times, both with two hits and a walk, and had an RBI. Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) went 2-for-5.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning. After Xavier (16-13, 3-0 BE) took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the inning, the Hoyas (12-16, 0-3 BE) wasted no time in pushing a run across in the bottom half. Busch led off with a double and Hall laid down a perfect bunt toward third base for a single, advancing Busch to third. With runners on the corners, Collins singled to center field to score Busch and tie the game at 1-1.
The Musketeers scored four unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs and runners on first and second, Brown appeared to be out of the inning when he induced a shallow fly ball to center. Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) over ran the ball, allowing two runs to score and the inning to continue.
Georgetown began chipping away at the deficit, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Collins and Anderson hit consecutive singles to lead things off. Christian Venditti (Newtonville, Mass./St. Sebastian's School) put down a perfect sacrifice bunt that the third baseman bobbled, allowing Venditti to reach and load the bases with no outs. Patrick Camporini (Safety Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic) drew a bases loaded walk to score Collins and Curtiss Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's/Phillips Andover) hit a fly ball to the fence in left field, just missing a grand slam, to drive in Anderson with a sacrifice fly.
The Hoyas tied the score in the seventh. Kuzbel singled to lead it off and Busch followed with a bunt single that the third baseman threw away, allowing the runners to advance to second and third. Hall hit a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left, to plate Kuzbel. After Collins walked, Anderson singled to right to score Busch from second to knot the score at 5-5.
Xavier scored three unearned runs in the top of the eighth and three more runs in the top of the ninth to retake the lead. A bases loaded walk to AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian) in the bottom of the ninth gave the Hoyas their final run.
Georgetown hits the road for a midweek matchup at George Mason on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Blue & Gray will then fly out to Omaha, Neb. for a weekend series at Creighton.
