WASHINGTON - A pair of Hoyas were selected to the BIG EAST Baseball Honor Roll on Monday afternoon, as announced by the conference. Sophomore starting pitcher Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and freshman outfielder Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) were each recognized for their play over the weekend in Georgetown's series win over Villanova.
Hall batted .500 (4-for-8) with a .636 on-base percentage and .750 slugging percentage in Georgetown's three games versus the Wildcats. He was on base all four times in Saturday night's 6-4 win, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and was also hit-by-a-pitch. He drove in a pair of runs with a double and also scored a run while swiping three bases. He hit his second double of the weekend on Sunday, just missing a home run as the ball was less than a foot away from clearing the left field wall.
Smith set a career high with nine strikeouts while pitching eight scoreless innings in Georgetown's 2-1 victory over Villanova on Friday night. Smith scattered just four hits and three walks over his eight innings, throwing 70 of his 112 pitches for strikes, lowering his season ERA from 3.71 to 3.32. His eight innings pitched tied a career-high which he set earlier this season at Grambling State.
This is Hall's first weekly honor and Smith's third this season. He was also selected to the Honor Roll in consecutive weeks, March 24 and March 31. Smith joins senior Steve Anderson (Albany, N.Y./Northfield Mt. Hermon Prep (Mass.)/Guilderland) as the two Hoyas to be recognized three times this year by the BIG EAST. Anderson has twice been named to the Honor Roll and was the BIG EAST Player of the Week on March 31. Additionally, sophomores Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) has earned two nods to the Honor Roll. Senior Patrick Camporini (Safety Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic) and juniors Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area) and Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) have each been selected to the Honor Roll once.
The Hoyas (17-26, 3-12 BIG EAST) will play their final home game of the season on Wednesday when they host the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) at 7 p.m. at Shirley Povich Field. The Blue & Gray will wrap up their BIG EAST schedule next weekend with a three-game series at Butler.
