WASHINGTON - Former Georgetown University sailors Charlie Buckingham, Sydney Bolger and Chris Barnard participated in the Aquece Rio International Sailing Regatta that took place in Rio de Janeiro at the Marina da Gloria, August 9-12. It was the first test event in preparation for the 2016 Summer Olympics taking place in Rio.

A total of 368 athletes representing 24 nations participated in the event. Women's events included 49er FX, laser radical, 470 W and RS:X W while men's events included 49er, laser, 470 M, RS:X M and finn.

With the Sugarloaf Mountains and the Christ the Redeemer statue providing a majestic background for all sailors involved, Buckingham, a 2011 graduate, placed seventh in the men's laser event. Meanwhile, Barnard, a 2013 grad, placed 26th in the same event. The former Hoyas were the only two representatives of the United States in the men's laser.

Bolger, a 2012 graduate, placed 13th in the women's 470 with crewmember Carly Sheritz. The duo was two of four women representing the United State in the event.

All three sailors are currently members of the US Sailing team and ranked in the top two in their respective classes
