WASHINGTON - The No. 6 Georgetown University men's soccer squad will host the No. 9 UC Irvine Anteaters on Sunday afternoon at Shaw Field. The Hoyas are currently 2-1-2 on the season and playing their second ranked opponent of the year.
On Thursday, the Hoyas fell to Virginia Commonwealth University, 2-1, in overtime at Shaw Field. Junior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph's) scored GU's goal in the 50th minute, but the Rams came back for a late score to tie it. In overtime, VCU had the best chances and connected in the 100th minute for the upset.
On Monday, Allen earned weekly honors as he helped the squad to a 2-0 week.
Allen was named to the honor roll after totaling four points on a goal and two assists in a 4-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin. He tallied six shots in the game and eight for the week playing a significant role in GU's 2-0 win against Harvard University in the home opener.
It was Allen's first nod to the honor roll this season and the second of his career. It marked Georgetown's second honor roll award of 2014.
Allen leads the team in scoring with eight points on three goals and two assists. Sophomore forward Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard) is second on the team with five points (2 G, 1 A) while junior forward Melvin Snoh (Coatesville, Pa./Malvern Prep) has tallied one goal and one assist for three points. Senior goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) has two shutouts on the season and has tallied 16 saves so far this year.
UC Irvine got a big win to start off its East Coast road trip striking early against the Mountaineers of West Virginia University for the 3-2 victory Thursday night. Eduardo Calzada managed his first two-goal match as an Anteater while continuing to extended the UCI point lead with nine on the season. Thomas Janjigian provided two assists from corner kicks.
This is the first meeting between the squads.
Sunday is the final contest in a four-game homestand for the Blue & Gray. Live stats as well as a webcast featuring Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser will be available at www.GUHoyas.com. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
All Boy Scouts wearing their uniform will receive free admission for the match, as well as a Georgetown Scout Day Patch for their uniform. The game is also be a part of the "Bring your `A' Game" promotion. All kids who show an `A' on their report card or graded assignment will get into the contest for free. After the match, the coaching staff and members of the team will be holding a skills clinic for all kids under the age of 14.
