WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's basketball team plays the second of two road games on Tuesday, Jan. 13 when the team visits DePaul. Tipoff at Allstate Arena in Chicago is slated for 9 p.m. (ET).
The Georgetown-DePaul game will be shown live on FOX Sports 1 at 9 p.m., with Eric Collins and Stephen Bardo calling all of the action. The radio call of Rich Chvotkin can be heard locally on Sports Talk AM 570.
The Hoyas, who have a strength of schedule rated No. 8 in the country - the highest in the BIG EAST Conference - are 10-5 overall and have a 2-2 record in league play. Georgetown split a pair of games last week, beating Marquette at home, 65-59, last Tuesday and falling in overtime at Providence, 60-57.
Tuesday's game with DePaul will be the 31st meeting all-time between the teams. The Hoyas lead the head-to-head series, 23-7, and have won 14 of the last 15 meetings overall and the last seven on the road, including a 71-59 win on the road last season. The Hoyas won both regular season meetings last year before the Blue Demons posted a 60-56 win in the BIG EAST Tournament.
Senior center Joshua Smith (Kent, Wash./Kentwood/UCLA) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. He averaged 13.5 points and 11.0 rebounds with 2.0 steals in a pair of games last week. He connected on 64.3 percent of his field goals (9-of-14) and was 81.8 percent from the free throw line (9-of-11).
Against Marquette at home, Smith scored 12 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had three steals as the Hoyas held on for the win over the Golden Eagles. In the loss to Providence on Saturday, he scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for his second-straight double-double and the fourth of the season.
Overall this season, he is second on the team in scoring with 12.9 points per game and leads the team with 6.7 rebounds. Smith ranks ninth in the BIG EAST in scoring and eighth in rebounding. He is also shooting 63.5 percent from the floor, which ranks fourth in the BIG EAST, and has connected on 68.6 percent of his free throws.
Junior guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Oak Hill) is one of two Georgetown players scoring in double figures, leading the team in scoring with 14.3 points per game (fifth in the BIG EAST). The Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year, who has scored in double figures 11 times this year, also leads the team with 3.5 assists (ninth in the BIG EAST) and is fourth on the team with 4.0 rebounds per game.
Senior guard Jabril Trawick (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends) has scored in double figures seven times season, including four of the last six games. Overall this season, he is averaging 7.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 53.2 percent from the floor. Senior, forward Mikael Hopkins (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha) is scoring 4.1 points per game, but is second on the team with 5.7 rebounds and leads the team with 2.1 blocked shots per game, which ranks third in the league. Senior guard Aaron Bowen (Jacksonville, Fla./QEA [N.C.]) is fifth on the team in scoring with 6.9 points per game.
Freshman forward L.J. Peak (Gaffney, S.C./Gaffney) has been the leader among a group of four freshmen playing significant minutes this season ranking third on the team overall in scoring with 9.8 points per game, while grabbing 2.6 rebounds and handing out 1.5 assists. Forward Paul White (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) is fifth on the team in scoring with 7.1 points and fourth with 3.1 rebounds, while Isaac Copeland (Raleigh, N.C./Brewster Academy [N.H.]) is averaging 3.9 points and 1.7 rebounds and guard Tre Campbell (Washington, D.C./St. John's College HS) is averaging 2.7 points and 1.2 rebounds. The freshman class has combined to average 23.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists, while accounting for 37.1 percent of the team's minutes played and 32.7 percent of GU's scoring.
DePaul enters Tuesday's game with a 9-8 overall record and a 3-1 mark in the BIG EAST following an 81-64 loss at Villanova on Saturday. Junior forward Myke Henry and sophomore guard Billy Garrett Jr. are two of four players on the team scoring in double figures, leading the Blue Demons with 12.8 points apiece. Sophomore center Tommy Hamilton is third on the team in scoring with 12.3 points per game and leads the team with 6.8 rebounds, while senior forward Jamee Crockett is fourth on the team with 11.6 points per game. The Blue Demons are shooting 44.9 percent from the floor as a team, including 37.0 percent from beyond the arc, which ranks second in the league. DePaul is second in the BIG EAST, averaging 8.1 three-point field goals per game.
