WASHINGTON - Georgetown University junior men's basketball player D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Oak Hill) was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday. This is the second time this season that Smith-Rivera has earned this honor.
Georgetown, winners of its last two games and four of the last five overall, improved to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the BIG EAST Conference with wins over DePaul (78-72) and Butler (61-59) last week.
The Hoyas, who rank among the top-20 in the country according to strength of schedule and are receiving votes in both the Associated Press Top 25 and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' poll, host No. 5-ranked Villanova on Monday night, Jan. 19 at Verizon Center. Tipoff is slated for 9 p.m. The game will be shown live on FOX Sports 1, with Tim Brando and Bill Raftery calling the action. The game can be heard locally on ESPN 980 AM.
In a pair of games last week, Smith-Rivera averaged 19.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in the Hoya wins. He started the week with 25 points, eight rebounds and four assists in the win over DePaul. Smith-Rivera hit a career-high free throws, including six in the final 34 seconds, as he scored at least 25 points for the third time this season.
In Saturday's win over Butler, Smith-Rivera scored a team-high 14 points and blocked a shot as time expired to preserve the win over the Bulldogs.
