BEALLSVILLE, Md. - The Georgetown University men's golf team opens play at the 31st Annual Georgetown Intercollegiate at The Members Club at Four Streams on Monday morning. The Blue & Gray will be one of the 12 teams competing in the 36-hole, two-day tournament at the par-71, 7,035 yard course in Beallsville, Md.
THE FIELD: This year's Georgetown Intercollegiate field includes: Brown, DePaul, Illinois State, Navy, Princeton, Richmond, Rhode Island, St. Joseph's Temple, Weber State and William & Mary.
VETERANS GOLF ASSOCIATION SERVE AS HONORARY CAPTAINS DURING PRACTICE ROUND: The 12-team field played its practice round on Sunday, joined by special guests from the Veterans Golf Association (VGA). Six members of VGA served ate lunch and played during the practice round with the team's competing in the tournament, allowing the student-athletes to spend the day with the military heroes.
The relationship between the VGA and Georgetown University men's golf, is a new one fostered by GU men's golf coach Tommy Hunter. The VGA aims to introduce golf to men and women of the United States Armed Forces, helping them heal, restore and recover from combat-related exposure, a mission Hunter felt could be helped by the Georgetown Intercollegiate's field of student-athletes.
"It was a day of dialog between intercollegiate golfers and veterans who have bravely fought to protect our freedom and our country," Hunter said following Sunday's practice round. "This is the first time we've done something like this and it turned out to be a very special, moving day."
LAST SEASON AT THE GEORGETOWN INTERCOLLEGIATE: Last season then-freshman Cole Berman (Philadelphia, Pa./The Haverford School) earned a victory in the Hoyas' home tournament, his second of the fall, after defeating William & Mary's Alex Hicks on a one-hole playoff. Berman shot 2-under par 140 during the tournament.
HOYA LINEUP: Berman will be joined in the GU lineup by sophomore Jack Musgrave (Chesterton, Ind./Andrean), sophomore Sam Madsen (Madison, Wis./Edgewood/Cardinal Gibbons[Fla.]), freshman Harrison Rhoades (Raleigh, N.C./Needham Broughton) and junior Andrew Rudy (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines).
Rhoades has been impressive in his first semester on the Hilltop, earning BIG EAST Men's Golfer of the Month for September, after top-10 finishes at the Navy Fall Classic, Windon Memorial Classic and Firestone Invitational
Senior captains Raleigh Chapin (Doylestown, Pa./New Hope Solebury) and Matthew Moosavian (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Prep), junior Austin Rendell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and freshmen Kevin Jackson (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) and Anthony Perrino (Concord, N.C./The Canon School) will also play in the tournament.
