Softball Travels to North Carolina for Landfall Park Hampton Inn and Suites Invitational

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown softball team continues the 2015 season this weekend as it travels to Wilmington, N.C. to participate in the Landfall Park Hampton Inn and Suites Invitational. Originally scheduled to from Friday through Sunday, the Sunday games have been cancelled due to the forecasted cold weather.

The Hoyas will be playing double headers on both Friday and Saturday with the first game coming against UMBC on Friday at 10 a.m. ET, following a meeting with UNC Wilmington at 3 p.m. On Saturday, GU will play against Saint Joseph's at 12:30 p.m. and UNC Wilmington at 5:30 p.m.

Georgetown is going into the invitational with a record of 2-2 after its opening weekend at the 2015 Music City Classic in Nashville, Tenn. The Blue & Gray posted a total of 27 runs over the course of the weekend, which are 13 more than GU had last season through four games.

Senior Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake), in addition to going 1-1 over the weekend and pitching a total of 15.2 innings with an ERA of 1.34, currently leads the team in batting average at .500 with six hits, six RBI and a homerun. Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) and Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) are second and third on the team in batting average, sitting at .462 and .429, respectively, each contributing six runs as well.

Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) is leading the team in home runs at two, which has already doubled her total from the 2014 season.

As a team, Georgetown is currently second in the BIG EAST in team pitching with an ERA of 3.11.

The invitational will serve as season opening action for Saint Joseph's and UNC Wilmington, the Retrievers currently sit at 0-4.

UMBC
The Retrievers will arrive in Wilmington, N.C. with a record of 0-4 after being held to five runs at the Charleston Southern Tournament. UMBC has squared off with Georgetown 11 times and holds a series advantage of 5-6. The last win for the Blue & Gray was a 5-6 final on the road in Baltimore, Md. in 2014. Kaelin Jackson leads the Retrievers with three runs, two home runs and three RBI, she holds an average of .333.

On the mound, Jessica Holte leads all pitchers with 13.2 innings pitched and an ERA of 3.07. She has eight strikeouts over two complete games.

Saint Joseph's
Saint Joseph's is opening the season at the Landfall Park Hampton Inn and Suites Invitational. The Hawks are returning 18 letterwinners, including seven starters from the 2014 team that finished 22-20. Saint Joseph's was picked to finish third in the Atlantic-10.

The teams have faced off a total of two times, with the Hawks holding a 2-0 advantage. The last meeting was a 2-0 loss for Georgetown in 2010 at a neutral site.

UNC Wilmington
Like the Hawks, UNC Wilmington is beginning the 2015 season at the invitational. The team is returning 11 letterwinners from last year's squad that went 18-34. UNC Wilmington was picked to finish seventh in the Colonial Athletic Conference.

This will be the third meeting between GU and the Seahawks, with the series tied at 1-1. Both meetings came in 2011 at a neutral site, with Georgetown winning the second game, 2-1, in 2011.
