NEW YORK - Georgetown University fell behind early in the game and staged a late rally, but could not pull within 10 points as the Hoyas lost to St. John's, 81-70, at Madison Square Garden Saturday afternoon.
The loss ends a three-game win streak for the Hoyas, who fall to 18-9 overall and 10-6 in the BIG EAST, while SJU improves to 20-9 overall and 9-7 in league play.
Junior guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Oak Hill) scored a game-high 29 points and seven rebounds to lead Georgetown. Senior forward Mikael Hopkins (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha) had his first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior center Joshua Smith (Kent, Wash./Kentwood/UCLA) scored five points and had three rebounds and fouled out after only eight minutes.
The Hoyas fell behind early in the game and were down by 11 points, 43-32, at the break before St. John's extended its lead to 16 points on a pair of 3-pointers from Phil Greene IV, first at 52-36 and then 57-41, early in the second half. The Red Storm took their biggest lead of the game, 67-50, on a free throw from D'Angelo Harrison with 7:18 to play in the game.
Three-pointers from Smith-Rivera and senior guard Aaron Bowen (Jacksonville, Fla./QEA [N.C.]) cut the SJU lead to 73-62 with just under two minutes left in the game. Smith-Rivera's trey with 1:31 to play made it 75-65, but Georgetown would get no closer.
Georgetown had an early 3-0 lead after freshman forward L.J. Peak (Gaffney, S.C./Gaffney) sank a pair of free throws and one from freshman forward Isaac Copeland (Raleigh, N.C./Bridgeton Academy [N.H.]) and a 3-pointer from Smith-Rivera gave GU a 6-5 lead. That was the last of the game for the Hoyas, as the Red Storm went on an 11-0 run and took a 16-6 lead on a basket from Sir Dominic Pointer.
The lead was seven points after a 3-pointer from Smith-Rivera (18-11) and a layup from Smith (20-13). Bowen's 3-pointer cut the margin to 27-18 with 9:51 to play in the half, but SJU used a 7-1 spurt and took a 34-19 lead after a jumper from Pointer with 6:48 to play.
A tip-in from Hopkins at the buzzer cut the SJU lead to 43-32 at the break.
The Hoyas finished the game shooting 37.9 percent from the floor (25-of-66), including 37.0 percent from three-point land (10-of-27) and were 52.6 percent from the free throw line (10-of-19). GU held a 46-40 advantage on the boards, handed out 14 assists and had 13 turnovers.
Georgetown plays its final road game of the regular season on Tuesday, March 3, visiting famed Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis for a meeting at Butler. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. The game will be shown live on FOX Sports 1, with Joe Davis calling the play-by-play and Bob Wenzel serving as the color analyst.
