WASHINGTON - While the start of the spring rowing season is still a few weeks away, members of the Georgetown women's rowing team competed at the Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints on Saturday, January 31. The Erg Sprints, which is the largest indoor rowing event for juniors in the United States, hosted by the Alexandria Crew Boosters Club and held at TC Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia.
Sophomore Christina Johnson (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow ) won the College Women's Openweight 2,000-meter event, finishing in 7:09.2.
Several other Hoyas competed in the same event and finished with top times. Sophomore Margaret Dunne (Larchmont, N.Y./Convent of the Sacred Heart), junior Emily Buongiorno (Newton Square, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy), senior Keara Schmeiser (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken), junior Savannah Kochinke (San Francisco, Calif./The Lawrenceville School [N.J.]), junior Jocelyn Hlawaty (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) and freshman Alexandra Porrazzo (Greensboro, Vt./St. Andrew's [Del.]) all finished in the top 10.
Freshman Allie Garceau (Atkinson, N.H./Phillips Exeter) won the College Lightweight Women's 2,000-meter event, in a time of 7:35.8. Senior Ruth Speidel (Manlius, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) took second in 7:38.1
Freshman Sophie Kershaw (El Dorado Hills, Calif./St. Francis), freshman Joanna Moley (Darien, Conn./Greens Farms Academy), freshman Grace Benson (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd), freshman Caroline Thomas (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS), senior Katie McGowan (Potomac, Md./Walt Whitman), senior Catherine Sandstrom (Seattle, Wash./Ingraham), freshman Emily Marshall (Toronto, Ontario/Branksome Hall ) and freshman Morgan Zeiss (Washington, D.C./Georgetown Visitation ) all helped the Blue & Gray take 10 of the top 12 spots.

The Hoyas open their 2015 spring season with Class of 2006 Cup against the University of North Carolina on March 28. Racing will take place on the Potomac River.
