WASHINGTON - WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's lacrosse team (4-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) closed the game on a 7-0 run to avoid a comeback attempt from the Vermont Catamounts (2-5, 0-0 America East), earning an 18-10 victory on a rainy Tuesday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field.
The Hoyas jumped out to a decisive seven-goal lead by the beginning of the third quarter, but Vermont stormed back, scoring seven of the next eight goals to close to within one goal, 11-10 late in the third. Senior midfielder Joe Bucci (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) scored the first of seven consecutive GU goals to seal the victory and avoid a scare.
Senior attack Reilly O'Connor (Brooklin, Ontario/The Hill Academy) led the offense with four goals and three assists for a season-high seven points. Sophomore midfielder Peter Conley (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck), the defending BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, scored a game-high five goals to help GU tally 18 goals, the most for the team since 2008.
Freshman goalie Nick Marrocco (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) had 13 saves to earn his fourth-consecutive win, while graduate student Gabriel Mendola (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca[Harvard]) went 20-of-32 at the faceoff X and picked up 11 ground balls in the winning effort.
Georgetown took control early as junior midfielder Corey Parke (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) scored the game's first goal, before sophomore midfielder Eduardo White (Littleton, Colo./Kent Denver) and O'Connor each added goals during a game-opening 3-0 run.
The Catamounts broke through with 7:11 remaining in the first, but O'Connor scored on freshman attack Stephen Quinzi's (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) assist. Quinzi scored a goal of his own with five seconds remaining in the first, after deflecting the Vermont's goalie pass, picking up the ground ball and scoring to give GU a 5-1 lead.
Conley scored two of Georgetown's four second-quarter goals, to help build a 9-3 lead at halftime. He added another goal less than one minute into the third quarter to help Georgetown take a seemingly insurmountable 10-3 lead.
Vermont answered back, scoring the next five goals, including two from Ian MacKay, who finished with a team-high four goals. MacKay's last goal cut GU's lead to two, at 10-8, with under five minutes remaining in the third.
After senior midfielder Charles McCormick's (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) goal ended a 5-0 Vermont run, the Catamounts added two more goals to make the score 11-10 with 1:19 remaining in the third quarter.
Sophomore midfielder Devon Lewis (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) weaved through the Catamount defense and found Bucci, who scored with 18 seconds remaining in the third quarter to give GU some breathing room.
Freshman midfielder Craig Berge (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) scored 31 seconds into the fourth quarter to start a run of five goals in five minutes for Georgetown, as the Hoyas went on to win 18-10. The victory is the Hoyas fourth consecutive win, their longest win streak since 2012.
The Hoyas return to action on Saturday, March 14 when they host No. 5/5 Duke (6-1, 0-0 ACC). Opening faceoff is scheduled for noon at Multi-Sport Field.
