WASHINGTON - Sophomore third baseman Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) and junior right-hander Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) of the Georgetown University baseball team were both named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, as announced by the conference on Monday. The awards recognize Kuzbel and Smith's efforts in GU's four games last week.
Kuzbel batted .471 (8-for-17) with a .529 slugging percentage, helping lead the Hoyas to a 2-2 week. After recording two hits against Illinois State on Saturday, he went 6-for-9 in Sunday's doubleheader sweep over Northwestern at the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida. In the second game, Kuzbel had four hits, including the go-ahead two-run double in the top of the ninth inning as GU came-from-behind for an 8-6 victory.
Smith helped end Georgetown's five-game losing streak with a six-inning, one-run performance in a 7-1 win in game one of Sunday's doubleheader versus Northwestern. He struck out a season-high eight batters, finishing one short of his career best.
It is the sixth weekly honor for Smith in his career and the first for Kuzbel. Smith also earned the honor after the first weekend of the season when he went seven shutout innings against Delaware. These are the third and fourth awards of the season for the Hoyas as AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian) also earned a weekly award following the first weekend.
The Hoyas are back in action on Monday evening in Florida with a game against Western Michigan. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. with redshirt senior Jack Vander Linden (Dallas, Texas/The Episcopal School of Dallas) getting the start on the mound for Georgetown.
