WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's rowing team will be represented at the 2015 U-23 World Rowing Championships in both heavyweight and lightweight competition. Rising junior John Carroll (Bronxville, N.Y./Fordham Prep) will be representing the United States in the Men's Heavyweight 4- while incoming freshman Hector Formoso-Murias (Key Biscayne, Fla./Belen Jesuit) will be racing for the U.S. in the Men's Lightweight 1x.
Carroll, a member of the 2015 Georgetown varsity eight this past spring season, earned an invitation to the heavyweight men's sweep selection camp that began in early June. The camp was responsible for selecting both the heavyweight 8+ and heavyweight 4-. Carroll was named to the four-man shell without coxswain on July 8.
"I was impressed with the improvements John made this year with the Georgetown squad," said Georgetown Head Coach Luke Agnini. "He ended up stroking our varsity eight at the end of the season and I'm not surprised that he was able to hold his own this summer among the best young athletes this country has to offer."
Formoso-Murias won the lightweight single event at the U-23 World Championships Trials on June 24, earning the right to represent the United States in the lightweight 1x. He will be entering Georgetown this fall to row on the lightweight squad. He is a recent graduate of Belen Jesuit and was a bronze medalist in the 1x at the 2015 Youth National Championships.
"We were very excited to watch Hector compete this spring," said Agnini. "He continues to outpace expectations and we wish him all the best as he goes up against the best U23 lightweight scullers in the world."
The 2015 U-23 World Rowing Championships will be held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Racing will be held from July 22-26.
