Day 2 in Rome.

Women's Basketball

Ancient Rome

Aug. 15, 2015

ROME, Italy - Wow! It was another amazing day in Rome for the women's basketball team.

We began the day with breakfast in the courtyard of our hotel before heading off to practice. On our way there, a thunderstorm popped up giving us hail and even a light show.

The bus wasn't able to get fit right in front of the practice facility, but with the downpour, the girls couldn't have walked or they would have been soaked for practice. The staff was there to improvise, however, as we were promptly provided with a windowless van to stand in the back of to take us to practice. Everyone agreed it felt like a scene out of the movie Taken, but it got us to practice relatively dry.

Stella Azzurra's facility was wonderful with the Nigerian Men's National Team practicing on one court and us on the other. Despite the long day of travel and touring yesterday, it was a productive practice and we were able to run through things before our first game on Monday.

Following a quick lunch, it was off to The Colosseum to begin our tour of Ancient Rome. The Colosseum was absolutely amazing and everyone agreed it was one of the highlights of the trip thus far. What made it even better was our tour guide, Mia, who was a master storyteller and brought Ancient Rome to life for us. She walked us through The Colosseum and then The Forum teaching us the living history of our surroundings.

We then parted ways with some of the group as one half went to watch the Nigerian Men's National Team play, while the others headed out for more sightseeing. Ki-Ke was fortunate enough to know a majority of the players on the Nigerian team, so it was a bit of a reunion for her.

The other group had another amazing dinner of Italian dishes. Coach A certainly made an impression on our waiter who took quite a shine to her. Needless to say, she is always welcome back at that establishment. From there it was a nighttime viewing of the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and The Pantheon.

What night would be complete, however, without a stop for gelato? After walking all day, it was thoroughly enjoyed by all!

It was another busy day in Rome and tomorrow we will pack up bright and early to take the bus to Florence to continue our tour.
