WASHINGTON - Georgetown University football freshman defensive lineman Marquis Parris (Atlanta, Ga./Tri Cities) was selected as the Corvias Patriot League Rookie of the Week and junior defensive back Jelani Williamson (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) was named honorable mention when the league announced its weekly awards on Monday. The honors recognize Parris' and Williamson's efforts in GU's 31-17 setback at then-No. 19/25 Harvard University on Friday night.
Parris earns his first career weekly honor after recording a career-high six tackles against the Crimson, including 2.5 tackles for loss (TFL) that accumulated three yards. He was also credited with a quarterback hurry, forcing an interception on a key third down in the second half. Parris helped lead a defensive front that allowed just 3.9 yards per carry and just 58 rushing yards in the second half, to a Harvard offense that came in averaging 216.5 yards per game on the ground.
This is the third weekly award for the Hoyas this season as Hunter Kiselick (Nutley, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and Harry McCollum (Arlington Heights, Va./Saint Viator) each earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors on September 12 and September 26, respectively.
Williamson was among the team leaders with a season-high 10 tackles on Friday night, including four solo takedowns. He also had one of Georgetown's three interceptions, picking off his first pass of the season in the fourth quarter that led to a GU field goal. He was part of a Hoya defense that allowed just 117 total yards in the second half, forced four turnovers and blocked a punt.
This is Williamson's first career honorable mention selection and the sixth of the season for the Hoyas.
Georgetown will return to Cooper Field for a two-game homestand, beginning this Saturday, October 8. The Hoyas will welcome Princeton to the Hilltop for the final nonconference contest of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network as well as Sirius XM radio (Sirius 132, XM 204).
