WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's soccer team got all of the offense they would need in the first half as the No. 6-ranked Hoyas scored five times in the first half en route to a 5-0 win over Butler in a BIG EAST Conference match on a sunny, but windy day at Shaw Field.
Sophomore forward Amanda Carolan (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) and forward Crystal Thomas (Elgin, Ill./Wheaton Academy/Notre Dame) scored two goals apiece and senior forward Grace Damaska (Milton, Ga./Blessed Trinity) added one. It was the fifth time this season the Hoyas scored at least four goals in a game.
Georgetown, ranked No. 6 in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and No. 3 by Soccer America, improved to 10-1-2 overall and 2-0-2 in the BIG EAST with the win. It extended Georgetown's unbeaten streak to 11 games and it was the team's sixth-straight shutout.
"Today's win was a very much-needed three points," Head Coach Dave Nolan said. "The first half performance in particular was excellent. We were very efficient on our chances and scored five really good goals on six opportunities. It was great to see Amanda and Crystal tag a couple each and it is always nice to score some goals in the process.
"The second half was a little disappointing as we took our foot off the gas, but it is on to Wednesday and our makeup game against Villanova."
The Hoyas wasted little time in getting on the board, scoring off their first opportunity just over a minute into the game. Junior midfielder Rachel Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Pingry) played a ball to Damaska in the box on the near side and the senior forward deftly sent a ball through to Carolan, who tapped it past the keeper from the post at 1:22.
In the 11th minute, it was Damaska's turn. Sophomore forward Caitlin Farrell (Wallingford, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) sent a low ball from just past midfield to Carolan in the box. Carolan one-timed it to Damaska at the near post and she deposited it at 10:05 for her team-best ninth goal of the season.
Carolan scored her second goal in the 17th minute. Junior midfielder Chloe Knott (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College) played a ball up to Farrell on the near side and Farrell sent a low pass through traffic to Carolan at the far post and she knocked it past two defenders for a 3-0 lead.
Up 3-0, Thomas took over. She tallied an unassisted goal in the 42nd minute, picking up a loose ball after a turnover by the goalkeeper in the box and blasting a shot from 12 yards in the 42nd minute. Then, with less than two seconds left in the half, she took a through pass from junior defender Elizabeth Wenger (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and blasted a shot from 22 yards out that beat Butler goalkeeper Hannah Luedtke to make it 5-0.
Georgetown outshot Butler, 10-3, and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Hoyas are back home on Wednesday, Oct. 12, hosting Villanova in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Shaw Field. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. The game will be shown live on the Georgetown Athletics website, www.GUHoyas.com, with Monika Moore calling the play-by-play.
