WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (4-2) will travel to Towson, Md., on Wednesday to take on the Towson University Tigers (5-0) at noon at SECU Arena. The contest marks GU's fifth game away from home as part of a seven-game road swing.
Senior guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after helping the Hoyas to a 3-0 week in her native Florida, including a pair of wins at the 2016 San Juan Shootout held in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Woodard averaged 18.7 ppg and 8.0 rpg for the week as well as tallying six steals, five blocks and four assists in three starts. She led the Hoyas in scoring with 20 points in a 66-53 win at Florida International University on Tuesday, and in a 67-60 victory over Wright State in the San Juan Shootout with 23 points. In the 68-54 victory over Penn State in the second game of the tournament, Woodard pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Blue & Gray.
Woodard is currently leading the squad in both points and rebounds with 17.3 ppg and 8.8 rpg. She also has a team-best 11 blocks for the season. In the BIG EAST Conference, Woodard is the only player in the league to be ranked in the top five in scoring, rebounding, blocks and offensive rebounds.
Following Woodard, sophomore guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) is second with 16.0 ppg as well as 4.7 rpg and a team high in steals with 27. Junior guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) rounds out those in double figures with 14.5 ppg, 8.2 rpg and a pair of double-doubles to her credit.
Georgetown holds a +6.7 rebounding margin over opponents, shooting 38.4 percent on the season and averaging 10.2 steals per game. The Hoyas are currently 3-2 on the road.
Towson improved to 5-0 with the win over George Mason on Sunday. It is the best start to a season since the 2008-09 team started the year with five-straight victories. It is also the fifth time in program history that a Tiger squad has started the year with at least five-straight victories. The best start in school history belongs to the 1979-80 squad, who opened the year with nine-straight victories.
Jordyn Smith was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Co-Player of the Week on Monday. Smith, who was honored for the first time in her career, averaged 15.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in a pair of Tiger victories.
Georgetown is 5-3 all-time against the Tigers, and 2-1 on the road. The Blue & Gray won the meeting last season at McDonough Arena, 82-46. The last meeting in Maryland was a 67-57 Hoya victory during the 2007-08 season.
GU Head Coach Natasha Adair will see a familiar face on the opposing sideline on Wednesday. Towson Head Coach Niki Reid Geckeler was an assistant on the Hilltop for 10 years. Adair and Reid Geckeler were on the same staff for four seasons under former Head Coach Pat Knapp.
Tipoff on Wednesday is scheduled for noon. Links to live stats and a video stream can be found in the schedule on www.GUHoyas.com.
