GU Tennis Set to Open BIG EAST Play

The Georgetown men's and women's tennis teams will hit the road this weekend for matches against DePaul and No. 15 University of Chicago (UChicago). Both the men and women will face the Blue Demons on Saturday at 3 p.m., while the women will match up against the Maroons on Friday at 2 p.m.

The women are coming off of a 5-2 win over Towson on Feb. 9 at the Arlington YMCA. The victory came in the Hoyas' second match of the season.

Freshman Risa Nakagawa (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) has been strong for the Blue & Gray, playing at the No. 2 spot in 2016. The newcomer is currently undefeated in both singles and doubles play this season, rallying back to defeat Towson's Nicole Shakhazova in three sets, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1, in GU's last match.

The DePaul women (2-5) enter the match after dropping decisions to then - No. 51 Purdue, 5-2, and No. 37 Tulsa, 4-0.

UChicago comes to the match after falling 6-1 to University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee at its last dual meet.

On the men's side, the Hoyas will look to extend the momentum of their latest 4-3 victory over Monmouth on Feb. 12.

Leading the GU men's team is sophomore Peter Beatty (Portland Ore./Middlesex School), who was selected as the BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week on Wednesday after going undefeated against Monmouth.

Beatty and Yannik Mahlangu (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley High School) secured the doubles point for the Hoyas with a win at the No. 2 spot. Sustaining the momentum, Beatty guided the Blue & Gray in singles play when he defeated Monmouth's Ale Gomez 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 3 spot.

The DePaul men hold a 2-6 dual season record going into this weekend. In their last match up, the Blue Demons fell 7-0 to the No. 74 Wisconsin Badgers.
