Martin Named BIG EAST Athlete of the Week

Feb. 24, 2016

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University track & field standout Heather Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) was named the BIG EAST Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week on Wednesday. The honor comes after the No. 14 Hoya women competed at the Penn State Tune-Up, held Saturday at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track in State College, Pa.

Martin ran shoulder-to-shoulder with Emma Keenan (Gwynedd Valley, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) and the two of them became the sixth and seventh Hoyas to break 2:05 in the women's 800-meter run as Martin clocked a PR (personal record) of 2:04.93 followed by Keenan with a time of 2:04.97 (PR). Martin's time garnered second-place honors in the event as former Hoya and All-American Chelsea Cox, running postcollegiately, won the event with a time of 2:04.71.

Martin's time was the fastest 800-meter time from the BIG EAST Conference over the weekend and ranks fourth in the league this season, as well as 19th nationally.

Martin and Keenan join an exclusive list of Hoyas to break 2:05 in teammate and All-American Sabrina Southerland (New York, N.Y./Benjamin N. Cardozo), NCAA Champion Miesha Marzell, teammate and All-American Andrea Keklak (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury/Princeton), All-American Julian Reynolds and All-American Becca DeLoache.

This is the first BIG EAST weekly award of Martin's career and the fourth-straight week the Hoyas have picked up the nod on the women's side.

The Hoyas open the postseason with the 2016 BIG EAST Indoor Championships, held this Friday and Saturday, February 26-27, at the state-of-the-art Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. Combined men's and women's, the Hoyas currently own 55 times/marks that rank among the top 10 in championship events, including nine that lead the BIG EAST Conference.

Live coverage of the championships will be available on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Pat O'Keefe and Cayleigh Griffin calling the action.
