BETHESDA, Md. - Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) lined a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning, scoring Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) from second base to give the Georgetown University baseball team its second-straight walk-off win, 4-3, over Princeton University on Thursday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. With the win, GU extended its winning streak to six games and improved to 10-7 on the season while the Tigers fell to 2-7.
Bushor had four hits on the day, finishing a triple shy of the cycle, and three RBI to lead the offense. Hall, Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga), Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) and Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./Saint John's College HS) all had two-hit efforts.
Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) started on the mound and was outstanding, going eight innings and giving up just one run on two hits with four strikeouts. He carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before giving up a one-out single. Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) picked up his second win of the season with two scoreless innings of relief after David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) gave up his first two runs of the season in the bottom of the ninth.
Things were quiet through the first five innings as neither team could push a run across. The Hoyas had the best opportunity in the fourth inning as Shirley led off with a single and tried to score from first on a double by Bushor, but was nailed at the plate by a perfect relay from the Princeton defense.
Georgetown cracked through in the bottom of the sixth inning when Bushor lined a two-run home run over the left field wall, scoring Hall who had led off the inning with a single. It was Bushor's first home run of the season and second of his career.
The Tigers got a run back in the seventh, picking up their first two hits of the game. The run came across to score on a wild pitch.
GU added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Garza singled and advanced to second on an error by the right fielder. Cristian Sanchez (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka Community) pinch ran and moved to third on a single by Bernstein and scored on a wild pitch to give the Hoyas a 3-1 lead.
Ellingson entered in the ninth with a two-run lead but gave up a solo home run and two walks before giving way to Davis. One run came around to score on a bases-loaded walk, but Davis got a 1-2-3 double play to keep the score tied, 3-3.
Hall singled to left field with one out in the bottom of the 10th and moved up to second on a ground out by Shirley. Bushor battled off several two-strike pitches before lining a single into right field to score Hall and start the Georgetown celebration.
The two teams will resume their four-game series on Friday at 3 p.m. at Shirley Povich Field. Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School/Temple) will take the mound for the Blue & Gray. Live stats and a web stream will be available at www.guhoyas.com.
Over the past five games, Bushor has raised his season batting average from .216 to .339, going 12-for-22 in the stretch with four multi-hit games.
