WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team (11-10) will make its third trip back to the state of North Carolina for a three-game series at the University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG) (15-6) this weekend. The two teams are scheduled to play on Thursday (6 p.m.), Friday (2 p.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m.) before the Easter holiday. Live stats for all three games will be available on www.guhoyas.com.
GU comes into this weekend after defeating crosstown-rival George Washington, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon to snap a three-game losing streak. Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) started on the mound and went a career-high 6.2 innings, scattering seven hits and allowing just two runs while striking out four. Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) pitched 1.1 innings of hitless relief with one strikeout. Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) struck out two in a perfect ninth inning for his first save of the season. The Hoyas were outhit, 8-3, but benefitted from six walks. On Monday, sophomore shortstop Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, marking the seventh time this season a Hoya has been recognized. It is the second career honor roll selection for Bushor, who was honored for his play in Georgetown's five games last week.
Bushor batted .450 (9-for-20) with a .650 slugging percentage, .500 on-base percentage with a home run, double and three RBI. He had multi-hit performances in three of the five games and went 4-for-5 with a home run and a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning against Princeton on Thursday night.
For the season, the Hoyas are led by DeRenzi who continues to be strong at the plate, batting .351 (26-for-74) on the season with team highs of five stolen bases and a .473 slugging percentage. He is tied for first on the squad with five doubles and is and is third with 11 runs scored. In his past four games, DeRenzi is 6-for-19 with three doubles and four RBI. Bushor has raised his average more than 100 points over his last eight games and is now batting .329 (23-for-70) with a home run, five doubles and 10 RBI. Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) is batting .256 (21-for-82) and leads the Hoyas with 16 RBI while tying for the team lead with five doubles and 12 runs scored.
UNCG enters the weekend with a 15-6 overall record after falling on Tuesday to N.C. A&T, 9-8 in 10 innings. The Spartans currently lead the country in several offensive categories, including team batting average (.364), slugging percentage (.542), doubles per game (2.96) and on-base percentage (.439) while ranking second in runs per game (9.3). UNCG had nine players, with at least 40 at-bats on the season, who are batting over .300. Three Spartans have batting averages over .400, led by Cesar Trejo who is hitting at .439 clip (18-for-41). Collin Woody is hitting .376 (35-for-93) and has team highs of five home runs, eight doubles and 27 RBI. Seven different players have at least five doubles and five have at least 20 RBI.
After this weekend, the Hoyas will continue their nine-game road swing with a pair of midweek games against George Mason and Coppin State. First pitch against the Patriots is set for 3 p.m. on Tuesday in Fairfax, Virginia while the contest against the Eagles is set for 3 p.m. on Wednesday in Baltimore. Next weekend, GU will play its final non-conference weekend series, traveling to William & Mary for three games.
