GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG) scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come back and defeat the Georgetown University baseball team, 8-4, on Friday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium. GU fell to 11-12 on the season, while UNCG improved to 17-6.
Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) went 3-for-5 to lead the Georgetown offense and also added an RBI and two stolen bases. Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) finished with two hits and an RBI.
Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School/Temple) pitched his second complete game of the year, going eight innings. He gave up eight runs, four earned, with two strikeouts.
UNCG took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning on a one-out triple and sacrifice fly.
The Hoyas knotted things up in the top of the fourth, 1-1. DeRenzi led off with a single and stole second with one out. He moved to third on a fly out by Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) and scampered home when Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) beat out an infield single for an RBI. Georgetown continued to threaten as Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./Saint John's College HS) drew a walk to put two runners on. Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley) then lined a shot into the right-center gap, but the UNCG right fielder made a nice running catch to save two more runs.
The Spartans regained the lead in the bottom half inning with another triple and sacrifice fly, going up 2-1.
GU answered right back in the top of the fifth. Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) singled and Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) walked with one out before DeRenzi lined a double down the left field line, scoring Hall from second to knot the score, 2-2. It was DeRenzi's fourth double and eighth RBI in his last five games.
Georgetown took its first lead in the top of the sixth. Bernstein singled with one out and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt from Weisenberg. Webber lined an RBI single into center, scoring Bernstein to put GU ahead, 3-2.
The Blue & Gray extended the lead to 4-2 in the top of the seventh. DeRenzi started the rally with an infield single and stole his second base of the game. He came around to score on Jake Kuzbel's (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) pinch-hit triple over the center fielder's head.
UNCG got a run back in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run, cutting Georgetown's lead to one, 4-3.
Mathews was cruising through the first seven innings, allowing just three runs and six hits to the nation's best offense. UNCG came in with a DI-best .366 batting average and led the country in several other categories. The GU defense was also playing strong, turning three double plays behind Mathews, including a slick 5-4-3 double play turned by Weisenberg and Bernstein. Bernstein also threw out a runner who rounded a base too far after an infield single.
In the bottom of the eighth, however, the Spartans' offense came to life, scoring five runs on seven hits, including two more triples, and an error to erase GU's lead and go ahead, 8-4.
The two teams will conclude their series on Saturday at 1 p.m. Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) will start on the mound for the Blue & Gray. Live stats will be available on www.guhoyas.com.
