Georgetown University softball freshman senior Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) was honored as the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday after guiding Georgetown to a 3-1 showing at the District Invite. GU defeated Maryland, Robert Morris and Columbia.
Starting all four games, Giovanniello led the Hoyas with seven runs, seven hits and five RBI. Batting .700, Giovanniello also recorded the only home run in the District Invite's six games played at the Nationals Youth Academy. The senior holds a team-best five homeruns and is currently tied for second in Hoya program history for most home runs in a single season.
In the circle, Giovanniello tossed a seven-inning shutout against Robert Morris, while recording three strikeouts and only walking one of 28 batters faced. Against Columbia, Giovanniello pitched the entire five innings for the Hoyas, while Columbia split the rubber among three pitchers. Giovanniello recorded a game-best three strikeouts, allowing only four hits while giving up only a single walk in 20 batters faced.
Giovanniello and the Hoyas will look to continue their success in trip to Tempe, Ariz. for Arizona State's Louisville Slugger Invitational, March 11-13. In the tournament, the Blue & Gray will match up against Ohio State, James Madison, Nebraska and host Arizona State.
